Jones went on to be a cult hero at Tranmere and firmly adjusted himself as a proven goalscorer. Jones made many apperances for Tranmere in a 7 year spell at Prenton Park before he was snapped up by Nottingham Forest on a free transfer.
Gary spent 2 years at the City Ground and was not a regular there, with first team football hard to find, he was loaned out by former club Tranmere before signing permanently again with Rovers following his release from Forest.
Jones went on to play another 3 and a half seasons with Tranmere before having his contract terminated at the end of the 2004/2005 season. Surplus to requirements at Prenton Park meant now the player was able to find a new club, and in early August he signed a 2 year deal with Grimsby Town.
His first season for Grimsby was electric as he banged in 16 goals making him top scorer ahead of his strike partner Michael Reddy. This season the Town faithful will be hoping more from Jonesy.
