While at Forest, Paul was loaned out to a whole selection of clubs. Notts County,Darlington,Peterborough United,Swindon Town,Rotherham United and Torquay United all had the pleasue of loaning Paul out before Peterborough snapped him permanently without paying a fee. Paul joined Posh in 1988 and left the club in 1990 to have a 3 year spell at Doncaster Rovers.
Crichton made around 150 apperances at Blundell Park spanning over 3 seasons at the club. He is a giant keeper with great reflexes and good composure, he rarely let his team down and did an all round decent job of managing the Town penalty area.
When manager Alan Buckley left Town the first time he took Crichton to West Bromwich Albion, first on a loan deal and then he snapped him up for £250,000 ending Pauls career for Town. Paul played 33 times for West Brom before being dropped to number 2 at the club.
Crichton was loaned out twice in his stay at Albion, firstly he joined Premiership Aston Villa on loan for 1 month, however he ended up just being there for a week, he was an unused sub and was only loaned in a quick goalkeeper injury crisis at Villa Park. Then also came 2 loan spells at Burnley where he made 1 apperance and sat on the bench for the rest of his time at Turf Moor.
However in November 1998 Burnley payed West Brom £100,000 for Crichton and he straight away earned the number 1 jersey. Paul made 90 apperances for Burnley in between 1998 and 2001 when he moved on again, this time to he moved forward to Norwich City who were looking for promotion to the Premiership. Norwich payed £150,000 for Crichton and only used him 6 times as he was either the 2nd or 3rd choice keeper at the club. Crichton stayed at Norwich up until the end of the 2003/2004 season when he was released on a free transfer.
Paul signed for Nationwide Conference National outfit York City where he stayed for 2 months making 4 apperances in goal for the Minstermen, however Paul joined fellow Conference National side Accrington Stanley a few weeks after exiting York ,claiming he was furious at Bootham Crescent saying that the club and manager forced him to leave. Paul is now the number 1 with Stanley and is still going strong at 37 years old.
For the 05/06 season Crichton signed as a Player/Coach for League One side Gillingham, but soon moved on to join Cambridge United in the Conference , where he remains.
