Georges Santos

Georges for Grimsby!
Not very loyal but none the less superb. Signed from Sheffield United near a few months into the start of the 2002/2003 season following his release from Bramall Lane because of his behaviour.

Georges who played mainly in midfield started off playing for Town in his usual central midfield role and soon found himself a crowd favourite. Georges then left the club for a few months after failing to agree terms on his short contract extension, however he came back and got over his little tiff.

Paul Groves decided to play Santos at centre back normally along side Steve Chettle,Simon Ford or Player-Manager Groves. Santos became the rock of the team, anything normally smacked up field in the air would land on his head and go back down field, if it was not for the others around him that season maybe Town would of avioded relegation from Division 1.

Georges became more gutsy and molded into his new adopted position which in the end earned him Grimsby Town Player Of The Season for 2002/2003. It was hoped that the Cape Verde Islands International would stay on to spear head Towns defence back to the First Division, however he had other plans and ditched the club and the fans that adored him so much.

After meeting after meeting with Georges manager Paul Groves and chairman Peter Furneax admitted that they had conceded theclubs best player and he joined up straight away with Ipswich Town on there pre-season tour, where he signed a 1 year contract on returning from the tour.

Santos went straight in as a regular at centre back for Ipswich but never really found the form he had while at Grimsby. Georges was an average player that season for Ipswich and at the end of the year manager Joe Royle decided not to offer him an extension and he was released from Portman Road.

Burnley and Queens Park Rangers lead the chase for his signature without no intrest what so ever coming from Blundell Park. In the end the tall centre back chose to join QPR over linking up with him former team mate Danny Coyne at Burnley. Santos remains at QPR and so far has done ok for himself

There is probably a few of you wondering why Santos could ever be a cult hero, for a start he only made around 30 apperances in total and he lied to the club saying he wanted to stay(how many times have we been told that one)but if it was not for his defensive genius on the pitch then this player would of not been in this category.
