Barnard has been one of the Mariners better performers so far this season from his more natural left-back role.
The former Barnsley man was called into the Wales squad by national manager Mark Hughes but is unlikely to figure with Hughes prefering Gary Speed at full-back and someone called Ryan Giggs on the wing.
Hughes will however be keen to keep Barnard in the squad as cover. With Saturday's game against Italy the biggest of the Welsh's qualification campaign, Hughes is desperate to keep his squad together.
The Italy game does however clash with Town's game against Peterborough. Town boss Paul Groves seems unlikely to request Barnard plays for Town though, instead he is glad Barnard has getting recognition.
Groves is not without cover for Barnard, but he is without natural cover. Jason Crowe, Mike Edwards and Wes Parker (all right footers) have played at left-back before. Parker seems to be the prefered choice between him and Edwards having coming off the bench in the past two games to cover on either side of the defence.
The return of Marcel Cas from suspension is likely to see Jason Crowe take Barnard's place in the starting eleven though.
