Town, as expected, lined up in their new all dazzling 3-4-3 formation. Whittle, Ramsden and Young formed the back three. Bull & Crowe as the wideman with Coldicott and Fleming in the midfield. Parkinson and Kamanam provided the width for Marvin Robinson up front. Former Hartlepool 'keeper Anthony Williams was in goal.
Town got off to an awful start, as they always do against the Zebra's. A free-kick from the right saw woeful marking from Town allowing a Brigg player to ghost in and scramble past Williams from close range.
Town soon settled though and at times started to show their superior class. The energetic Bull was causing no end of problems down the left with his touch tackling and determination.
At the back Ramsden looked at ease playing the sweeper like role behind Whittle and Young. Whittle however looked sluggish and on more than one occasion got caught when trying to turn.
Up front the pace of Parkinson and Kamanam was just too much for the Brigg defence, had Robinson got on the end of several low crosses, the scoreline would have read double figures.
It was Terry Fleming who got Town off the mark though. First pure grit saw him win the ball before embarking on a mini-solo run that was very impressive. 25 yards out from goal he spotted a gap and fired a low drive that flew into the corner of the net.
Town now had their tails up and looked likely to run riot. However the Zebra's defence did them proud.
It took a route one approach from Town to take the lead. Ramsden played a delightful long ball from defence into space for Parkinson to run onto. 'Parky' never looked like losing out in the race and finished with ease after drawing the 'keeper. Ramsden produced several classy long range passes all night and on this showing will prove a quality acquisition.
At the break Town made a host of changes with the majority of the ten outfield players being replaced. On came the likes of McDermott, Hockless and even more unknown trialists.
The mass changes saw Town lose their momentum although the attack was still linking up well. Kevin Nicholson on the left wing was putting quality ball after quality ball into the box, however he may lack the pace to play the left wing role.
A rare Brigg attack on goal brought a free-kick from which Ross Thompson curled it over the wall and into Williams right hand corner to level the game. Totally against the run of play but still a stunning strike.
As the game looked likely to draw to a close, Town popped up with the winner. Hockless' feint and cross was met by a superb volley by a trialist with no number on his back.....the general thinking is that it was former Walsall striker Carlos Garrocho.
A lot of positives to take from the game. The performances from newboys Ramsden, Fleming and Parkinson as well as that of trailist Ronnie Bull. The attacking was spot on but the defence looked very shaky at times. Russell Slade may well want to look out for another goalkeeper as well with Anthony Williams looking very dodgy between the sticks.
Also nice to see former player/manager Paul Groves at the game, watching his former club.
