The midfielder has struggled to find a club since his departure from Town in the summer of 2002. Spells with Grays Athletic and Woking proved far from successful leaving Burnett on the football scrapheap.

A trial with Luton earlier this season didn't result in a contract but the flair player refused to give up on the professional game.

After impressing during a trial reserve game for the Posh, manager Barry Fry offered Burnett non-contract terms to cover suspensions in his midfield.

"We need cover in the midfield area with two suspended and Wayne did well for us during the week," Fry said. "He will go straight into the squad for the important game at Sheffield Wednesday, but I have yet to finalise my final team."

Burnett wrote his name in Town folklore with the Golden Goal against Bournemouth in the AutoWindscreens shield back in 1998. Since then his career was hampered by injuries and he failed to rediscover the form he showed in the first six months of his Town career.
