The Dutchman hasfailed to impress in the games he's played since his move from Sheffield United. Manager Paul Groves was at first keen to snap the forward up but has now lost patience with the delay in the transfer and Ten Heuvel's average performances.
Originally it was a loan with a view to a permanent. For whatever reason the permanent will not happen and that's a disappointment," Grpves told the Grimsby Telegraph.
"He looked promising in pre-season but it hasn't worked out and we have to move on and fill that spot.
"We now have the money that was going to Laurens still in the budget to fill the spot up front. But whether we can do that before the weekend is questionable.
"It's fair to say that we wanted somebody proven in the first division but as we go down the pecking order some of the criteria have to be diluted.
"It stands out a mile that we need an experienced striker but, generally, they cost a fortune. Bringing in a youngster now would not be ideal.
"We've been through the list, through it again and now we're searching elsewhere."
Groves could well face a striker crisis if he fails to get a replacement for Ten Heuvel in. Injuries to Darren Mansaram, David Soames and Gio Carchedi leaves just Michael Boulding and Jonny Rowan as the available strikers.
