The former Everton man is now back training after a two-month injury lay off and Furneaux appears to have given Groves the green light to start negotiating a paycut with the striker.
Groves however is not convinced that an agreement is close.
"We're not close to an agreement," Groves told the Sports Telelgraph. We haven't even discussed it properly. It was discussed at the start of the season and nothing materialised.
"We need to sit down with him but he's only just started training again.
"This is the first time he's been back and stayed back. It's getting to the stage where we need to sort something out."
With Laurens Ten Heuvel returning to Sheffield United, Groves is left with just Michael Boulding and Jonny Rowan as his strike force. Even YT striker David Soames is a few weeks away from full match fitness.
Even if Jevons and Groves can agree on a paycut, it remains to be seen whether Groves will use the player. In the past Groves has opted to use loan strikers ahead of Jevons.
Groves is hopeful of bringing in a striker in the next few days and Jevons plight could be worsened by the news that Darren Mansaram is closer to returning than previously thought.
'Flash' was thought to be out for two months with a torn groin sustained in a youth game against York. Mansaram however has only suffered a slight tear and is expeceted to back in a fortnight.
