Gills link dismissed by Furneaux

Rumours have been rife since the weekend that the duo are heading for the Kent club, a move that would without a doubt see the Mariners season more or less over - providing they avoid a relegation scrap.

Gillingham lost main striker Marlon King to Nottm Forest last month in a deal worth just under £1million. Midfielder playmaker Paul Smith is now all set for a move to Premiership chasing Sheffield United.

Despite debts for the Priestfield club, manager Andy Hessenthaler has been told he can bring in replacements. Boulding especially may well fit the mould of the needed goalscorer following King's departure.

The two clubs have a fairly close relationship with Furneaux and his Gills counterpart Paul Scally friends. Scally's partner is former Blundell Park matchday host Sarah Cox (no, not the spitting Radio 1 DJ).

Both Boulding and Pouton are out of contract in the summer. With the chances of a swift return to the First Division more unlikely with every game, both could be forgiven for looking to fulfil their ambitions elsewhere.

Neither would be able to command a massive fee. The Grimsby Telegraph has reported a worrying fact that Boulding has a release clause in his contract for just £45,000. That's £5,000 less than the fee paid to Aston Villa almost a year ago.

Furneaux has denied any contact with the Kent club though, stating that Scally is currently in Nevada and has not spoken to him recently.

"There's no point in talking about rumours," Furneaux told Mariners Net. "There's been no interest that I know of. He (Paul Scally) hasn't spoken to me about it."
"It's interesting that the players which the fans were saying were not good enough, are now, allegedly, commanding interest from first division clubs.
"There has been no offers for any of our players, but we are always pleased when interest is shown by these clubs - perhaps these players are not as bad some people would have you believe.
"I understand that Paul Scally is in Las Vegas dealing with a matter. He sometimes rings when he comes, but he hasn't done so recently."
