Grimsby have only one goal to show from seven-and-a-half hours of football and now find themselves at the wrong end of the First Division table.
"To concede a goal so late on was a hard one to take considering we didn't think there was a great deal of difference between the two sides," said the Town boss.
"It wasn't that there were a great deal of chances at either end. It was just long-range efforts.
"I thought we were the better side in the first half without working their keeper.
"We felt that Paul Merson was a factor in having to change formation. If he gets on the ball he can hurt teams.
"We felt we needed to address that and to a degree it nearly worked.
"Depending on how you looked at it, it was either a 4-5-1 or 4-3-3. In the first half we had Terry Cooke and Darren Barnard playing quite high up the pitch.
"But when you're under the cosh in the second half Steven Kabba got isolated a little bit."
