The clean sheet was the first of the season and first since the 0-0 draw at Sheffield Wednesday late last season.
Speaking to Mariners Net, Groves also said he was pleased the fans got to saw a goalfest after the recent disappointments.
"It's been a tough week. I'm pleased for the fans, hopefully they've gone home happy today - they were exceptional in the second half," he said.
Groves delighted with win
"I'm delighted that we've got four goals at home and the clean sheet that everyone has been harping on about.
"I'm pleased for the players aswell, and pleased for the Board, they've dug deep and we've managed to get a couple of experienced players in - they made a difference today."
Groves also had words of praise for his two loan signings, Nick Daws and Iffy Onuora, who both played major roles.
"It's the fact that the ball doesn't come crashing back to the back four," Groves added. "As the game went on, I felt that his play (Iffy) with Michael was getting better. And Dawsey aswell, he's kept the thing moving and when it mattered he's in the right areas to break up things."
The confrontation between Darren Barnard and Tony Crane didn't worry Groves who said the matter was sorted by the two themselves.
"I think it was a defensive matter," he said, "but there's a time and place for that sort of thing and I'm concerned it happened on the pitch.
"It seemed to spark the two players into life."
