Hamilton was shown the red in the Carling Cup game on Tuesday for trying to strangle Rovers striker Gregg Blundell.
Whilst no excuse can be made for Hamilton's poor reaction, referee Carl Boyeson failed to get a red card for his disgusting two-footed lunge on Hamilton that sparked the incident.
Speaking the to the Grimsby Telegraph Hamilton admitted his rash reaction cost the Mariners the tie and a possible money spinning run.
"I'm really disappointed. It was a bad tackle but I shouldn't have reacted to it," Hamilton said.
"It was the heat of the moment and I'm just disappointed with myself.
"We were really comfortable and we ended up losing. That was down to my sending off and I'm sorry.
"It's got to be down to me if you look at it. I haven't seen the goals that we conceded but I've heard the first one was sloppy - but it's my fault.
"I was so annoyed and so disappointed to be sent off. I still can't believe it. It was a bad tackle but you can't rely on the ref to do anything.
"We're disappointed because they were nowhere near us."
