The former England under-21 international linked joined Grimsby in the summer after leaving Crystal Palace but has struggled with fitness and as not made a first-team appearance for The Mariners this season.

"Jamie has taken the decision to retire from football and obviously it's a decision we respect.

"He has business interests which he wants to pursue and we all wish him well for the future," Grimsby player-manager Paul Groves told the club's website.

"It was not a quick decision, but one which he has thought about for a long time.

"I'd like to thank him for his efforts and hard work during his time here.

"He worked hard to try and get fit and was a big influence on the younger players in the reserve side, who learned a lot from his enthusiasm for the game and his determination."

Pollock, who had previously played for Middlesbrough, Man City, Bolton, Palace and Birmingham (on loan), chalked up over 350 league appearances in his short career.
