The Gills interest in the fans favourite began earlier in the year as they looked to replace Paul Shaw, who signed for Sheffield United.
Michael Boulding was also targetted following the departure of Marlon King, but that interest seems to have cooled with the signing of Patrick Agyemang from Wimbledon.
The departure of Pouton comes as no suprise but still will prove a hard pill to swallow for both Paul Groves and the Mariners' fans.
The all-action No 7 has spent nearly all the season injured, but came back to first team action in the 0-0 draw at Bournemouth on December 13. Since then he's played every game but still is not fully match fit.
With Pouton's contract up in the summer, it appears the club are trying to get what they can for him having giving up hope of keeping him at the club.
Pouton signed for Town in 1999 for £150,000 from York City after a months loan spell. Then manager Alan Buckley described him as the natural replacement for Paul Groves. Time saw Pouton develop into the exact opposite of Groves. Whilst Groves was calm and collected, Pouton is a fireball of action with his unpredictable, yet adored, style of play. His desire to win and overall passion won over the fans straight away.
The loss of Pouton will no doubt throw Paul Groves' selection plans for tomorrow's trip to Port Vale in chaos. Now it is likely that Greg Young will play at left back with Jason Crowe partnerning Groves in midfield.
Groves is now also looking at replacements for Pouton in the loan market, again the name Nicky Daws is likely to be on Groves' mind.
Earlier this week Marcel Cas announced his departure and Stuart Campebll is set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines making it essential that reinforcements are brought in.
