Pouton injured himself during the pre-season game with Lincoln City and was told he would need an operation on his knee.
Yesterday the all-action midfielder was given the green light to start training after a three month layoff.
"Alan saw a specialist yesterday, he's pleased with his progress and he's stepping it up," Town physio Paul Mitchell told MarinersNet.
Pouton will still be out of the first team for a while yet as he builds his knee up and regains his fitness levels.
Days before his injury, manager Paul Groves stated that he was keen to build the team around Pouton and was ready to offer him a new contract to keep him at the club.
Fellow midfielder Stacy Coldicott is having less luck on his return from injury. Having broke his leg at Burnley last season, Stace is still struggling to recover but is assured he will return given time.
