Yesterday it seemed that two-time former manager Buckley was hot favourite to return for a third time charge in time of the Mariners.
However Peter Furneaux poured doubt on that by stating he hasn't spoken to Buckley in nearly two years.
Furneaux also added that the club won't be rushed into making an appointment, prefering to wait for the right candidate to come along.
"I can't comment on any individual. I don't know if Alan would want the job or if he wants to be back in football," Furneaux told the Grimsby Telegraph.
"I haven't spoken to him for about two years. It's up to people to apply and for the board to decide on the right man.
"I want to make sure we get the right applicants. It will depend on who applies, if they've already got jobs and all sorts of things like that.
"We've put somebody in charge at the moment and I've spoken to the players.
"I expect Graham Rodger and Neil Woods to be in charge for this weekend."
The Telegraph also reports that former Mariners striker Keith Alexander is now the favourite to take the Blundell Park hotseat. Alexander returned to managerial duties at Lincoln last week following brain surgery. Whilst Big Keith would be welcomed by Town fans, it's not known if he would want the extra pressure of the job, especially after his recent medical scare.
