Whilst the game was hardly an exciting affair, it proved that time is what was needed for Town as finally Russell's team started to gel into the 3-4-3 system.
The back three of Young, Whittle and Ramsden is looking far more at ease whilst Ronnie Bull and Jason Crowe are settling into their wingback roles.
With Stacy Coldicott missing Thomas Pinault got his first start alongside Terry Fleming. The result was that Coldicott and Fleming will most likely be fighting each other for the starting role, such was Pinault's performance.
The mix of Fleming's defensive strong play with Pinault's flair and vision was very exciting for the coming season. Pinault was the creator of Town's goal. A superb cross for Andy Parkinson to nip in front of him marker to head home from an acute angle.
Parkinson was Town's major threat all game with his pace and non-stop running. The balls into the channels for him are becoming more controlled rather than hopeful.
Abdul failed to impress despite a few half decent touches. The third striker, Mansaram, showed more cause for a contract but still is frustrating as ever.
In the second half Slade made changes to all his strikers with Sestanovich, Soames and Clint Marcelle (returning for a second trial) getting run outs.
Soames and Marcelle looked busy without creating anything of note whilst Sestanovich is getting better with each game. His strength, pace and vision could well see him pushing for that final starting place alongside Michael Reddy and Parkinson.
The late Dutch goal came from a Town mistake in defence, as usual. Greg Young gave away the ball outside his own area before redeeming himself by winning it back. However the youngster then gave it away again allowing Mghizrat to fire a powerful drive beyond the impressive Williams.
Overall a much better performance from Town as they get ready for Darlington and the rest of League Two.
