Graham Rodger was able to call on experience in the likes of Rob Jones, Stacy Coldicott, Ronnie Bull and Clint Marcelle. However Bull and Marcelle were both played out of position (Bull at centre back and Marcelle as right wingback) whilst this was Jones' first action since limping out of the Boston game last month.
Up front trialists Sergio Ommel and Anthony Hudson started with Paul Robinson. In midfield Graham Hockless partnered Coldicott with Nick Heggarty on the left hand side. Youth team defender Michael Smith started as the third centre back ahead of Paul Fraser in goal.
Town were straight away into the game and it was no surprise when Nick Heggarty opened the scoring after eight minutes when he was played through by Coldicott.
Halfway through the first half, the same trick was repeated but down the right side - Hockless this time the provider. Clint Marcelle raced away and finished past James Winter.
Town were cruising but before the break the scores were levelled when Rob Jones brought down David Foley in the box, Stephen Turnabll fired home from 12 yards.
The second half didn't live up to the first half in terms of entertainment but it still brought some action. Town extended their lead through Ommel after a superb cross from Hudson.
The Pool fought their way back into it with Carl Jones' superb 25-yard-effort that left Fraser no chance.
Town hung on for the win but a worrying note was the injury to Ronnie Bull after a shocking challenge by Jones. The former Millwall man was unable to walk unaided after the challenge.
On a positive side it was good to see Jones get 90 minutes under his belt but he was outshone by young Smith who showed maturity beyond his years in the back three.
Trialist Ommel looked way off match fitness and slightly laboured, although he did produce a few moments of decent skill and his goal was a natural finish. Personally Anthony Hudson looked a better bet, but he too limped out injured.
Town: Fraser, Jones, Smith, Bull, Marcelle, Heggarty, Hockless, Coldicott, Ommel, Hudson, Robinson.
