Whilst Newcastle managed to name Carl Cort, Michael Chopra and Andy Griffin in their starting line up. Town had to make do with the returning Jason Crowe and Jonny Rowan as the senior members. After that it was only Chris Bolder, Iain Ward and David Soames with, limited, first team experience.
1st year YT Ben Howard got a chance against Cort and Chopra as he partnered Kirk Wheeler in defence.
Fellow youth teamers James Davey and Nick Heggarty made up the left flank. Crowe and Ward down the right. Ash Hildred and Bolder took the central midfielder berths whilst Soames and Rowan occupied the striking roles. Bradley Hughes carried on between the sticks with Andy Pettinger still out with his injured hand.
The first half was very much Town dominated. Excellent neat passing from the youngsters left the Geordies chasing shadows for most the half. Hildred was running the midfield although his partner, Bolder, was leaving his foot in rather too late for ones liking. Not nice to see at all.
Cort, who Newcastle paid Wimbledon £7million for, looked quite awful and was in the back pocket of Howard for nearly all the game, never mind the half.
Chopra however proved a different test. His deep and speedy running was hard to deal with, Wheeler did his job well though. In fact it was Wheeler's first class challenge on Chopra that set the ball moving for Town's goal.
Soames picked the ball up before turning and heading goalwards. With the defence approaching he easily shrugged off one challenge, then a second. With a line of players between him and the goal, Digger controlled the ball dead before firing a rasping drive into the corner of the net from 20 yards. A great goal and no more than Town deserved.
The second half saw Town adopt the first team's tactics of ermmmm lets sit deep and hope.
The younger players began to tired and at times were caught short by Newcastle breaks. Town were indebted to Hughes for several fine saves to keep them in the lead. On one occasion the youngster pulled off 3 saves in quick succession before Cort fired high and wide.
The withdrawal of Soames cost Town as they lacked their cutting edge and pace on the break. The equalizer was inevitable and no real suprise when it came.
Sub Lewis Guy ran onto a through ball from midfield and kept a cool head to finish past the advancing Hughes.
A Newcastle win seemed on the cards yet a mixture of great forward play and a stroke of luck gave Town the win.
A long ball was wonderfully controlled by Paul Huckett, who had replaced Soames. His turn was met by a challenge but the richochet fell kindly allowing him to play in Rowan. Tony Caig spread himself well but Rowan kept his head and finished well.
A very good run out for some of Town's youngsters. Whilst they tired badly in the second half, the experience will no doubt aid their developments. Bright spot was no doubt the performance of David Soames.
