For the second successive season Stockport County came to to Blundell Park and returned home with all three points.

This time, although the margin was only 1-0, it was a much more convincing success than last season's 3-1 victory against Grimsby.

Stockport even missed a 12th minute penalty, awarded for handball by Peter Bore, taken by Mark Robinson and brilliantly clawed away by Mariners keeper Phil Barnes.

But Stockport continued to dominate and another set-piece involving Robinson led to the 36th minute matchwinner.

The ball broke to skipper Keith Briggs 25 yards out and he hit a screamer into the top corner, giving Barnes no chance.

Stockport squandered so many chances you got the feeling they would have to pay for this, but Grimsby offered little as an attacking threat and keeper John Ruddy, on loan from Everton, had no problems keeping a clean sheet in his second game for the club.

The game cried out for County to get the second goal they deserved and although they had a string of chances another goal was not forthcoming and they put a bit of pressure on themselves in the closing stages.

But in the end they had no trouble holding on for the 1-0 victory which was well deserved with a terrific display from each and every member of the side.

For Grimsby it was their first home league defeat since January, coming as it did just seven days after their first away win of the season.

For County things now look brighter and this was just the tonic coming a week after the 5-2 home win over Wrexham.

They are still nearer the bottom than the top. but if they can maintain this level of performance over the season they will clearly finish nearer the top than the bottom.

For Grimsby, a lack of cutting edge was all too obvious and with three strikers out due to injury, they need to get back on track and quickly.
