They survived what looked a stonewall penalty in added time when former Mariners favourite Phil Jevons appeared to be brought down in the box, but a Yeovil equaliser would have been rough justice on Grimsby who overcame an early goalkeeping error to wrap up the points four minutes from time.
The Yeovil goal came after 11 minutes when Arron Davies tried his luck from 25 yards and the shot skidded under the diving body of home keeper Anthony Williams.
But in an even first-half Grimsby gave as good as they got and the feeling at half-time was that the game was there for the taking.
Yeovil started the second-half strongly but Grimsby gradually pushed them back and when a Simon Ramsden free-kick on the hour was not cleared striker Martin Gritton got the final touch for his second goal in two games.
Almost immediately Yeovil made a double switch and the game could have gone either way as the clock ticked down.
Striker Andy Parkinson missed a great chance for Grimsby when he burst clear only to drag his shot wide.
But all was forgiven for the Merseyside man four minutes from time. He picked the ball up yards into the Yeovil half and drifted past three men before sticking the ball into the bottom corner.
The drama was far from over and Jevons was denied a successful return to Blundell Park referee Darren Drysdale. The official was given a standing ovation as he left the field at the end by the excited home supporters.
After three successive defeats at Blundell Park, Grimsby have now won two home games on the trot.
Now they face successive away trips to Rochdale, Oxford and Boston. A few points from those games and talks of a play-off place will probably return!
