Michael Boulding failed to recover from his 'knock' in training. Phil Jevons was given his first start in almost two years. Iffy Onuora did recover from a knee injury which meant he partnered Jevvo. Otherwise it was the same for Town.
In the first minute Jevons was brought down by former town target Curtis Woodhouse after skipping past the ex-Sheffield United man.
Town, or rather Onuora, scuffed a couple of half chances in the opening minutes. It took Town ten minutes to test Mark Tyler in the Posh goal, Jevons' shot easily held.
Moments later Campbell fired from distance but agains Tyler wasn't troubled.
The league game at Blundell Park saw Town struggle with the pace of former West Ham youngster Adam Newton. Again this was the case, the right winger skipped past Darren Barnard before floating a cross goalwards. The unmarked Leon McKenzie headed downwards from six yards but hit the post before Crane could clear. A let off for Town.
Peterborough's opener came on 22 minutes, yet it should never have been allowed. A right wing cross was caught, yes caught, by Andy Clarke with his back to goal. His hopefull kick sailed over Aidan Davison and into the goal. How the referee and his linesmen failed to see the handball is a mystery, especially when everyone in the ground saw it.
Town fired straight back though. Campbell ran forward only to be dragged down by Thomson 25 yards out. Jevons, Hamilton and Barnard stood over the ball. It was Jevvo who took the kick though, it's impossible to say if his effort was going in as it took a strong deflection which beat the scrambling Tyler at his feet.
The rest of the half was fairly even. Town showed some nice build up play whilst the Posh looked dangerous on the break with pace. On more than one occasion the defence was breached but Davison was quickest to the loose ball.
The second half got off to the worst possible start. Just over a minute in when Leon McKenzie's chipped pass was met by Steve Thomson. Mike Edwards' stretched to cut it out but failed. John McDermott raced back but the former Palace man held him off before firing past Davison.
Town tried to get back on level terms from the off and Jason Crowe was inches from connecting with Campbell's low cross with a flying header.
Crowe again almost got his first Town goal. Steaming through a crowd of players to pick up the lay-off, the former Pompey man got the ball caught in his feet and was denied.
Barnard crossed from the left for Onuora who pressured Tyler enough to force him to fumble. The ball fell for Jevons in space and with an empty net to aim at. His woeful volley fired wide.
Marcel Cas was introduced soon afterwards for Iain Anderson. The Scot has failed to make an impact in recent weeks and surely his place in the team is not warranted.
Cas used his pace well against the Posh defence as he sped past his man into the box. His ball across to Stuart Campbell was slightly behind allowing the defenders to recover and pressure Campbell into playing it back to Barnard. With time and space, Barnard spannered his shot into the side. Welsh intenational though.
A minute later and it was 3-1. Woodhouse found Newton in acres of space on the wing. With no challenge coming, Newton fired across Davison and into the net.
Peterborough looked the more likely to score for the next ten minutes and the feeling of a rout was near. Fortunately Town got back on track after Davison's fine save from McKenzie's close range header.
Tony Crane was pushed up front with Darren Mansaram replacing Onuora.
Clever crossfield play between Cas and Campbell gave Jevons the chance to head Town back into the game. With Tyler out of position a downwards header would have done the job. The looped effort did beat Tyler but also went over the bar.
On 83 minutes Town got the goal to make a frantic seven minutes. Hamilton's free-kick found Crane, his turn and shot was well saved by Tyler. Mansaram headed the rebound against the post but Cas was on hand to head home from a yard out.
Town now bombed forward and on 85 minutes should have took the tie back to Blundell Park. Mansaram controlled the long ball well before finding Barnard wide. His delightful ball found Campbell who turned Gill before cutting back for Jevons ive yards out. His sidefooted effort trickled goalwards as the defence and goalkeeper watched but eventually went wide.
Overall a very disappointing defeat. Once again Town struggled to cope with teams who break with pace. Performance wise it was fine. But performances don't count, wins do. With no cup competition left, our season is in danger of being over before the New Year. A run of wins in the league is a must, starting next Saturday at Bournemouth.
Man of the Match - Tony Crane. Tough choice between him and Jason Crowe. Crane was solid throughout and made numerous vital interceptions. Dominant in the air all game.
